Zips chalk up come-from-behind win

ALCESTER – It took
an extra inning to do it, but the Alcester Zips chalked
up a win at home against Scotland Sunday night when
Jeremy Reed’s home run in the bottom of the tenth inning
sealed the victory.

USDA issues alfalfa administrative order

PIERRE – The United
States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant
Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has released
information on genetically engineered alfalfa specifying
mandatory production practices for producers of Roundup
Ready ® alfalfa.

Sid Brown: WWII Pilot Instructor
June 12, 2008
HUDSON - Sid Brown, a
retired Hudson mail carrier, recently reminisced about
his time spent in the Army Air Corp. Sid was in the
service from January of 1942 until November of 1945. Sid
spent seven months receiving his cadet training at
Syracuse, New York. Sid, who was a teacher, first spent
about a year as an instructor for air mechanic
training. He then went on to become an air instructor
after receiving his wings and becoming a pilot at
Dothan, Alabama.

'Treasure Fest' slated for June 28
June 12, 2008
ALCESTER – Playing
on the Alcester community’s slogan of “A Small Town
Treasure”, final preparations are being made for the
first “Treasure Fest”, a community-wide celebration to
be held Saturday, June 28. Organizers hope the day will
become an annual family fun day.

Winquist to perform at Union County Fair
June 5, 2008
ALCESTER - The Union
County Fair will feature a Country Music Concert at the
fairgrounds in Alcester on Friday, August 1. Craig
Winquist, former Union County resident and 4-H alumni,
will be performing live with his band from 7:00-10:00
p.m. Winquist is a Nashville country music singer and
song writer.

A record number of
voters went to the polls on Tuesday to cast their
ballots in the June 3 Primary election, stemming mostly
from the emotional vote in the battle over whether to
allow the rezoning of nearly 3,300 acres of west central
Union County land for the construction of the Hyperion
Energy Center.
