The Alcester
Union & Hudsonite is
a weekly newspaper
serving northern Union
County and southern
Lincoln County in
southeast South Dakota,
and Sioux County is
northwest Iowa.
The Alcester Union &
Hudsonite serves as
the newspaper of record
for Union County, City
of Alcester, Town of
Hudson, and the
Alcester-Hudson School
District #61-1.
The Alcester Union
began publishing in
1889, serving the
Alcester community in
north-central Union
County, under publisher
W.A. Kelly. The
Hudsonite made its
first appearance in 1901
under publisher Robert
O. Schaber, serving the
town of Hudson in
southeastern Lincoln
County.
The two newspapers
served their communities
individually until 2004,
when they were combined
and reformatted into the
Alcester Union &
Hudsonite.
Over the years the
newspapers have won
several awards. In 2006
the Alcester Union &
Hudsonite won the
"General Excellence"
award in their
circulation category at
the South Dakota
Newspaper Association's
Better Newspapers
Contest.
