North Sioux City man injured in high-speed chaseBy Paul Buum, Editor/PublisherELK POINT – A North Sioux City man was severely injured after a high-speed chase with law enforcement on Interstate 29 last Wednesday ended when his car crashed into a bridge pillar at the Spink Exit 31.Stanford Pence, 41, was being questioned in his North Sioux City home on Wednesday morning by members of the Yankton County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Union County Sheriff’s Office, as they conducted an investigation into the burglary of a rural Yankton County residence.
According to the Union County Sheriff’s Office, during the interview and while other officers were searching the home, Pence fled from the house and drove off. A chase ensued northbound on I-29 with speeds reaching 110 MPH before Pence’s car hit the bridge pillar head-on at a high rate of speed. It is unclear whether Pence lost control of his vehicle or intentionally drove into the bridge pillar.Pence survived the crash and had to be extricated from the vehicle by emergency personnel. He was flown by helicopter by Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City. His condition is unknown as of press time Tuesday. |
