(Photo by Paul Buum, Editor/Publisher)- ALCESTER – Fire caused extensive damage to the kitchen area of a rural Alcester home early last Friday evening.
- Darren Moerman was making supper when he decided to make a quick trip into Alcester to pick something up. Moerman said he turned down the burner on the stove, hopped in his car and drove the 2 miles into town, where he made a quick purchase. When he returned minutes later he saw smoke coming from the home as he pulled in the driveway.
- Moerman said he immediately called 911 on his cell phone to report a possible grease fire at the home 1 mile south and one-quarter mile east of the Alcester Steakhouse, and the Alcester Fire Department and Ambulance was dispatched at around 5:20 p.m.
When they first arrived, firefighters had a difficult time spotting the blaze due to heavy smoke in the home. Once fire crews could see flames rolling across the kitchen ceiling it was knocked down quickly from outside the home before firemen entered to finish putting out the blaze.- The kitchen area received extensive damage, burning most of the upper kitchen cabinets. Although water damage was contained mostly to the kitchen and dining area of the home, the remainder of the single-story home suffered heavy smoke damage.
- Moerman’s wife and child were not at home at the time of the fire.
- A professional cleaning service from Sioux City was at the home early this week to begin the task of cleaning up.
- Moerman said he would be staying with family members in Hawarden while the home is repaired.
