Henry Van Ballegooyen
Henry
Van Ballegooyen, 80, of Hawarden, IA, died Saturday, November 7,
2009 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center. Funeral services were held
Tuesday at the Hawarden Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Tom Van
Engen officiating. Burial followed in the Grace Hill Cemetery.
Henry
Van Ballegooyen was born January 20, 1929 northeast of Hawarden, IA,
the son of Andrew and Allie (Bosch) Van Ballegooyen. He attended
rural school and married Dreaka Kooi on February 10, 1948 at
Lebanon, IA. The couple farmed near Hull, IA and in the spring of
1965 moved to a farm near Alcester. They moved into Hawarden in
January of 1982 and Henry then trucked livestock for many years. The
past two years Henry and Dreaka made their home at Bee Hive Homes.
Henry
was a member of the Hawarden Christian Reformed Church. He enjoyed
visiting and having coffee at Fiesta. He loved to fish and enjoyed
talking in Dutch to others.
He is
survived by his wife, Dreaka; four children, Harv Van Ballegooyen
and wife Marylee of Alcester, Carol Ver Hoeven and husband Duane of
Hawarden, David Van Ballegooyen and wife Sandi of Beresford, and
Audrey Groen and husband Don of George, IA; brother, Walter Van
Ballegooyen of Hawarden; three sisters, Mary Wilken of Ireton, IA,
Dorothy Patechek of Modesto, CA, and Nancy Bryson of Beresford; 11
grandchildren, Joe Van Ballegooyen, Kenny Van Ballegooyen, Jennifer
Morrell, Anna Simonsen, Carey Borchers, Kelly Ver Hoeven, Rob Van
Ballegooyen, Ryan Van Ballegooyen, Kristen Groen, Kayla Groen, and
Jake Groen; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Henry
was preceded in death by his parents; step mother, Alice Bryson,
newborn twin boys; and brothers, John, Joe, and Robert.
Lori Willette
Lori
Willette, 40, of Hudson, died Sunday, November 8, 2009 from injuries
received in a motorcycle-car accident near Hudson. Funeral services
were held Friday, November 13 at the Porter Funeral Home in Hudson.
Lori Mae Purdie Willette was born July 10, 1969 in Winnebago, MN,
the daughter of Eldon and Susie (Anderson) Purdie. She graduated
from West Sioux High School in Hawarden, IA. Following graduation
she returned to Minnesota. During the past year Lori moved to
Hudson, where she lived with Donald “Rick” Burdick. Lori enjoyed
riding motorcycles and this past summer attended the rally in
Sturgis. She also liked to take photographs.
She is survived by her father, Eldon Purdie of Utah; mother, Susie
Anderson Leeman of Hudson, her step-father, Rocky Leeman of Hudson;
2 sons, Michael Schiefen of Brookings, and Lee Schiefen of Fairmont,
MN; 3 brothers, Jeff Brandt and Heather of Winnebago, MN, Steve
Brandt and Natalie of Hudson, and Nick Brandt and Ladawn also of
Hudson; an aunt, Ethel Anderson of Winnebago, NB; nieces, nephews,
and cousins.
Lori was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Purdie.
Marie B. Larson Kosbab
Marie B. Larson Kosbab, 81, of Stratford, IA, formerly of Alcester,
died Friday November 13, 2009 at the Stratford Nursing and
Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services were held Tuesday, November
17 at Big Springs Baptist Church in rural Alcester, with Pastor
Daryl Runion officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Marie Bernice Erickson, daughter of Alvin and Deloris Hansen
Erickson, was born January 7, 1928 at Hudson, SD. She received her
education in the Union County area of South Dakota. On February 28,
1949, she married Fred Larson at the Big Springs Baptist. The couple
farmed in the Alcester area. She worked in a Hawarden factory and at
several nursing homes as a nursing aid. She also worked at area
restaurants. Mr. Larson died April 3, 1986. In 1987, she married
Paul Kosbab at Forman, ND. The couple moved to North Dakota. Paul
died in 1994. She then lived in Alcester, Akron and Hawarden area.
In 2004, she moved to Webster City, IA. and for the past 3 years has
resided at Stratford.
Marie and Fred were the parents of four children, Linda and Ray
Davidson of Webster City; IA, Charlotte and Don Vyhlidal of Pierce,
NE; Janet Crissy and Mark Larson, all of Sioux Falls; 15
grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sisters, Gertrude
Schutte-Forbes of Denver, CO; Frances Miller-Huebner of Akron, IA;
brother, Donald Erickson of Denver, CO.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her
parents; brother, Arnold Erickson; grandson, Charles Wittstruck and
great-grandson, Caleb Harms.
Margaret J. Leafstedt
Margaret
J. Leafstedt, 83, of Hawarden, IA, died Thursday, November 19, 2009
at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden. Funeral services
were held November 23 at the United Church in Hawarden with Pastor
Dan Lozer officiating. Burial followed in the Grace Hill Cemetery.
Margaret Jean Leafstedt was born February 28, 1926 in Hawarden, IA,
the daughter of Herbert C. and Ida Mae (Crowther) Scott. She
received her early education at Scott School and graduated from
Hawarden High School in 1944.
Margaret married Don A. Leafstedt on September 22, 1945 in Hawarden.
They made their home in Hawarden where they raised their children,
Wendee Jean and Don “Kirk” Leafstedt. Margaret assisted Don in the
operation of Leafstedt Insurance Company. She served as the Director
of the Commission of Veterans Affairs for Sioux County for many
years until her retirement in December of 1994. Don died on December
18, 1992.
Margaret was an active lifetime member of the Associated Church
where she served on boards and with the Women’s Fellowship. She was
active with the Big Sioux River Historical Society and helped put
together the Hawarden History Book. She was president of the Senior
Citizens Center and a member of Eastern Star and the Mutual
Improvement Club.
Margaret is survived by her son, Don “Kirk” Leafstedt and wife Rita
and their two daughters, Emily and Katie of Mason City, IA;
sister-in-law, Margaret Ann Scott of Hawarden, IA; brother-in-law,
Ray Leafstedt and wife Marilyn of Sun City, AZ; nieces; nephews; and
many dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Don A. Leafstedt;
daughter, Wendee Jean Leafstedt; brothers and sisters and their
spouses, Charles Scott, Evelyn Whitehouse and Lloyd, Paul Scott and
Clayre, Dorothy Busch and Art, Madeline Bird and Max, and Wayne
Scott.
Leo K. Jervik
Leo
K. Jervik, age 78, passed away Sunday, November 22, 2009 at Sanford
USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls. Funeral services were held
Wednesday, November 25, at Hudson Lutheran Church in Hudson, with
burial at Lands Lutheran Cemetery of rural Hudson.
Leo Kermit Jervik was born May 11, 1931 in Lincoln County, South
Dakota to Magnus and Martha (Pederson) Jervik. He was baptized and
confirmed at Lands Lutheran Church. He attended Highland Center and
Eastview Grade Schools and graduated from Alcester High School in
1949. Leo worked as a farm hand until entering the U. S. Marine
Corps in 1952. He served in Korea and was honorably discharged in
1954.
Leo married Darlene Miller in April 10, 1954. They lived and farmed
south of Canton until 1990, when they moved to a farm near Hudson.
Leo also did various types of custom farming in the area throughout
the years. He retired from farming in 2004. He enjoyed selling used
cars and having coffee with family and friends. His greatest
enjoyment was spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Those grateful for having shared his life are: his wife of 55 years,
Darlene; his children, Greg of Canton, Brenda (Wade) Johnson of
Brookings, Kirk (Julie) of Sibley, IA, Lane (Julie) of Hudson, and
Kevin of Long Beach, CA; eight grandchildren, Nicole Jervik,
Christopher Jervik, Alex Jervik, Daniel Johnson, Jeremy (Nalo)
Johnson, Brandon Johnson, Karisa (Blake) Dykstra, and Kelsey Jervik;
one great-grandson, Isaiah Johnson; sister Joyce Anderberg of Sioux
Falls; brother-in-law Milo Knutson of Canton; and uncle Kenny
Pederson of Sioux Falls. He was preceded in death by his son, Clark,
his parents, and his sister, Audrey Knutson.
