Mildred ZieglerMildred Ziegler, 98, of Alcester, died January 10, 2008 in Alcester. Funeral services were held January 14 at the Alcester Baptist Church.Mildred Ziegler was born February 16, 1909 in Ida Grove, IA, to parents David and Jessie (Hamilton) Wilson. At a young age, Mildred’s family moved to rural Alcester. She attended the Miller Country School and graduated from Alcester High School in 1927.Mildred received her teaching certificate at Madison Teachers College and taught in several rural Union county schools. In 1937 Mildred entered Mounds Midway School of Nursing in St. Paul, MN and graduated in 1940. She was assigned to the Veterans Hospital in Dwight, IL.Mildred joined the American Red Cross and then the Army Nurse Corps on June 3, 1944. She was stationed at Hammond General Orthopedic Hospital in Modesto, CA. After the war was over she returned to the Veterans Hospital in Indianapolis, IN.Mildred was transferred to the Royal C. Johnson Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls when it opened in 1949. She married Arthur Ziegler in 1950. Mildred worked at the hospital in Sioux Falls until she retired in 1970. After their retirement they moved to Rogers, AR and spent many winters in Weslaco, TX. In 1992 they moved to Joplin, MI and resided at the Spring River Retirement Village.Her husband died in 1996. Following his death she moved back to Alcester and then to Trail Ridge Retirement Center in Sioux Falls in 1997. Mildred was a long time member of Alcester Baptist Church. Survivors include one brother, Dwight (June) Wilson of Orongo, MI; one sister, Ramona (Derwood) Ericson of Hawarden, IA; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.Her parents; husband; two sisters, Ruth Bergdale and Louise Wilson; brother Leonard Wilson; and infant brother Wesley Wilson, preceded her in death. |
