Thelma Hammitt
Thelma Hammitt passed away December 22, 2007, in Sacramento, CA. A memorial service and internment were held December 30 at Mt. Vernon Memorial Park in Fair Oaks, CA.
Thelma was born in Norway Township, South Dakota, to Haakon and Ida (Sullestad) Thormodsgaard. She attended country school and graduated from Alcester High School in 1942.
Thelma received the first Hammitt Music Award that year for her vocal ability. During her high school years she worked in the box office of the Barrymore Theater in Alcester.
Thelma married Orlin Hammitt, and to this union were born four children; Donald, Larry and Lynelle Hammitt, and Juleen Stenzel.
Thelma worked for many years at an automotive company and as a receptionist for Dr. Douglas Hammitt, Podiatrist.
Survivors include eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; sister-in-law Myrtle Thormodsgaard, brothers-in-law Alvin Jamtgaard, Ralph, Deecort Jr., Howard, Jack and Douglas Hammitt; and brother Nels Thormodsgaard of Madison.
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sisters Selma, Berthine and Nora; and brothers Ingert, Edwin and Albert.
