Cubs, Lady Cubs get come-from-behind wins

Both the Cubs girl’s and boy’s basketball teams got come-from-behind wins over the Parker Pheasants on Dec. 13 in Alcester.
The girls, who trailed the Pheasants by eleven at the half, outscored Parker 18 to 5 in the second half for a 33-31 win. The boys trailed Parker by seventeen at the half, and then went 13 of 20 from the free throw line in the second half and outscored the Pheasants 31 to 9 in route to an opening game win, 48 to 43.
The Lady Cubs came out in the third quarter and got field goals from Mallory Schempp, Megan Wood, Emily Schreur and a lay-up at the close of the quarter by Wood, leaving the Lady Cubs trailing 23-28 going into the fourth quarter.
In the final quarter, Schreur and Julia Brown hit free throws before the Pheasants scored. A field goal from Mallory Schempp and a pair of free throws by Schreur got the Lady Cubs within two, 29-31 with 4:00 to play. The second free throw hit the front of the rim and bounced around before going in the hoop. At the 2:00 mark, Wood hit a field goal to tie the contest at 31-31. Mallory Schempp scored the winning goal on a feed from Brown with 0:06 to play in the game.
Leading the Lady Cubs in scoring was Wood with 10 points. Mallory Schempp added nine points. Brown scored seven points and was five of six from the free throw line. Schreur scored seven points and was three of four from the charity stripe. She also pulled down nine rebounds.
The boy’s come-from-behind effort started just before the first half ended, when Eric Anderson hit a three-pointer from the corner. This was followed with a three-pointer by Eric Beeler to start the second half. Matt Schempp and Todd Anderson each hit four free throws in the third quarter, in which the Cubs were 9 of 12 from the charity stripe. The Cubs trailed 33 to 39 at the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter started with Schempp scoring off a lay-up and Trent Neu hitting on a rebounded shot and the Cubs trailed 37-39. Parker came back and took a five point lead with six minutes remaining into the final period. Schempp scored on a lay-up and Anderson hit two free throws and the Cubs were behind by one at the 4:00 mark. Two minutes later Schempp hit a pair of free throws for a one point Cubs lead. Parker tied the score at 43-43 but Schempp hit a field goal at the 1:20 mark for a two-point lead. Todd Anderson knocked down three free throws in the final seconds for the final tally and a Cubs win.
Schempp led the Cubs with scoring with 16 points and was six of eight from the free throw line, while Todd Anderson scored 15 points and was nine of twelve from the free throw line. Eric Anderson scored five points, while Neu and Jon Rodriguez each scored four points. Beeler scored three points and Eric Tabbert added two points. Todd Anderson had 12 rebounds while Neu had 11 rebounds.
The girl’s JV team lost 30 to 20 as Shaina Hummel scored 11 points, with five of six free throws. Alyce Johnson added four points while Lexy Schempp added three points and Ashley Hanzlik scored two points.
The boy’s C team lost 36 to 19 as Nathan Johnson, Damian Schouten and Tyler Tabbert each had four points. Brandon McCormick scored three points, Barry Wood had two points while Andrew Braaten and Dylan Kratochvil each had one point.
The boy’s JV team lost 37 to 30 as Tyler Tabbert scored 11 points while Eric Anderson added six, and Jon Rodriguez had five points. Austin Skoglund scored four points, while Andrew Braaten and Jacob Busch each had two points.
