Nine wrestlers qualify for regions

Nine wrestlers will represent Alcester-Hudson at the Region 2B wrestling tournament this Saturday in Tea.
The nine wrestlers; Levi Merrick, Lance Merrick, Darrell Oberg, Derrick Lundberg, Kelly Haisch, Corey Haisch, Kevin Sanford, Carl Serck and Alex Merrick, finished in the top four in their weight classes at the District 4B wrestling tournament held at Dakota Valley last Saturday.
2007 State Champion Carl Serck began defense of his crown with a first place finish at 152 pounds. Serck won by an 8-1 decision over Aaron Gill of Elk Point-Jefferson in the title match. In his opening match, Serck won by a pin in 1:40 over Joel Lundberg of Beresford. He now has a 42-2 season record.
Alex Merrick, who wrestled in last year’s state meet, also took first place in districts with a 3 to 2 decision over Troy Turkelson of Elk Point-Jefferson. Merrick opened with a pin in 3:20 over Cody Schoellerman of Beresford. Alex is 28-10.
A school record was set in thirty years of wrestling at Alcester-Hudson when three brothers qualified in the same year for a Region meet. Their father, Todd, also wrestled in a Region meet in 1978.
Levi Merrick placed second place at 103 pounds as he lost by a pin in 5:41 to Riley Braun of Elk Point-Jefferson. In Levi’s opening match he won by major decision, 12 to1 over Andy Jorgensen of Tea. Levi carries a 33-7 to region.
Lance Merrick completed the record as he took third place with a 5 to 1 decision over Nathan Glanzer of Dakota Valley. Lance opened with a 3-0 decision over Glanzer and takes a 29-11 record to regions.
Darrell Oberg, who took eighth at the state meet last year placed third at 119 pounds with a pin in 2:26 over Seth Clark of Dakota Valley. Oberg is 31-13 going to regions.
Derrick Lundberg, in his first trip to a region tournament was fourth at 125 pounds as he lost by default to Hesston Erickson of Beresford. Lundberg had won earlier by major decision, 15 to 2 over Dustin Carnes of Tea. Lundberg is 19-17.
Kelly Haisch, who wrestles at 130 pounds, took fourth place with a 9 to 2 loss to Bryan Klostergaard of Beresford. Kelly is 15-12.
Corey Haisch, at 140 pounds, placed fourth with a 5 to 2 loss to Sam Hansen of Beresford. Corey is 31-15.
Kevin Sanford, who wrestled at the state level last year, took second place as he lost by a pin in 2:45 to Darin Schoenwald of Marion-Freeman. Sanford had won earlier by a pin in 4:26 over Todd Gannon of Beresford. Kevin is 10-5.
As a team, the Cubs finished in third place with 105 points, with Marion-Freeman in second with 174 points and Elk Point-Jefferson in first with 200 points.
