(Submitted photo) YANKTON - The Alcester-Hudson sixth grade girls’ basketball team captured the championship of the Roger Haas Tournament on Saturday in Yankton. The girls started all three games slowly, but outscored their opponents in the second half in all three games to get the wins.Opening the tournament with Yankton, the girls led by one at the half but outscored Yankton, 21 to 16, on their way to a 30 to 24 win. The young Lady Cubs bench proved valuable in the first half as they scored seven points in the second quarter as Jamie Jansen hit a pair of free throws at the half buzzer when she was fouled in the act of shooting as the buzzer sounded. Jansen also added a field goal earlier in the quarter as did Skylar McConnell while Kassie VanWyk hit a free throw.Taylor Kjose scored nine points in the third quarter, including a three-point goal at the buzzer. Kjose added a second three-pointer to seal the win in the fourth quarter. Kassie VanWyk added two field goals in the fourth quarter and had six rebounds.For the game, Kjose scored 14 points while VanWyk added five points. Scoring four points apiece were McConnell and Jansen. Tyleen Nelson scored two points and Courtney McKee added one point. Nelson led the team in rebounding with nine boards. VanWyk had six boards and Kjose had five boards. In game two, Alcester-Hudson won over Bon Homme, 22 to 17, as the girls overcame a full court press and used a zone defense to keep Bon Homme away from the basket. In this game, the girls trailed 11 to 8 at the half, but outscored their opponent, 14 to 6 in the second half for the win.
In this game, McKee started off the scoring by stealing the basketball and dribbling half the court using her left hand and shooting and making a left-handed lay-up. Lindsey Terpstra also had a steal and lay-up in the first quarter. Shenia Doering got the Lady Cubs’ only score in the second quarter. In the third quarter, the girls went down under as Nelson scored two field goals, with one coming off a feed from McKee. The Lady Cubs overall scoring was well balanced as Kjose scored six points. Scoring four points apiece were Nelson, Doering, McKee and Terpstra.The rebounding effort was led by Nelson with six rebounds and Kjose with five.In the championship game, the Lady Cubs fell behind by five to Harrisburg before they rallied to win the game, 19 to 14.Kjose ran off three straight field goals to start the third quarter to give Alcester-Hudson a 10 to 9 lead. Kjose was to add a fourth field goal in the third quarter as the girls held a 14 to 10 lead as their full court press and zone defense limited Harrisburg to one point in the quarter.Kjose added two more field goals in the fourth quarter and Terpstra hit a free throw.VanWyk, McKee and Kjose each had two blocked shots in the second half, while McKee was all over the court going for the basketball, getting several steals and leading the team in rebounding with 13 boards. Leading the team in scoring was Kjose with 12 points while Doering had four points and VanWyk added two points. Terpstra scored one point, while Nelson added 10 rebounds. |
