(Submitted photos)- RAPID CITY - Five wrestlers finished out the AAU youth wrestling season at the state meet in Rapid City on April 4-5-6. Making it to the State Tournament is an accomplishment in itself to be proud of. Win or lose the experience of it all is one to always remember.
- First grader Brandon Schuller wrestled in a full 16 man bracket. Though wrestling very well, Brandon lost out on Saturday with two losses against very good opponents. Double elimination ended his day.
- Second grader Cash Hemmingson was also hard at work. He suffered a first round loss but then came back in the second round for an exciting come from behind win. In his third round, he suffered his second loss and was then out of competition.
- Also a second grader, Zach Mc Kee came home with a fourth place finish in the State standings. In his third round, Zach lost a close match by a score of 6-5. He then came back in the fourth round and won that match by pinning his opponent. In Sunday’s final match, he lost by a decision of 12 to 8, in what was a well wrestled match.
- Rick Heiman was very busy on Saturday wrestling five times with his last match finally being wrestled around 6 pm. Earlier through the day Rick had recorded three wins by decision with scores of 2-0, 12-2, and 11-2. He had one loss by decision with a score of 9-5. His last match of the day was also a loss by decision but he had already wrestled far enough into the wrestle back bracket that he was assured a place to wrestle in Sundays top eight places. Sunday, Rick wrestled a great match but lost by decision.
- Rick has wrestled eight years in youth wrestling and has made it into the State Tournament three times. In previous years Rick has had an 8th and 7th place finish. This year he closed out his season with a great 6th place finish.
- Sixth grader Erik Barnes was also in a full 16 man bracket. Saturday Erik was serving notice. Three times Erik went to the mat and pinned each of his opponents. With three straight wins, he earned his way into the championship match on Sunday. Sunday’s match for first place was exciting with Erik wining by a 6-3 decision. With this win, Erik took home the first place Championship.
- Erik has wrestled six years in youth wrestling and made it to State five times. This is his third time as a State Champion.
