Lady Cubs tame Tornadoes

The Alcester-Hudson girl’s basketball teams opened the season with a sweep of games against Centerville last Tuesday night in Centerville. The Lady Lady Cubs varsity won 42 to 29 behind Megan Wood who scored 12 points and Julia Brown who added 11 points. The Lady Cubs JV team won 21 to 18 as Alyce Johnson scored eight points.
The Lady Cubs varsity squad battled to a 7-7 tie at the end of the first quarter as Wood started the Lady Cubs off with two field goals, while Brown went 3 for 4 from the free throw line midway through the quarter.
Centerville took a 17-13 lead with 2:00 left in the second quarter, but the Lady Cubs, behind Brown, Sarah Haisch and Lexy Schempp, gave Alcester-Hudson a 19-17 lead at the half. Lexy Schempp got the final goals of the half on a lay-up and off a feed by Brown.
The Lady Cubs opened up a four-point lead in the third quarter off a three-point field goal by Haisch. The Tornadoes came back within one, but Emily Schreur put in a rebounded shot, followed by two field goals by Brown, the second off a steal and lay-up. Schreur hit a second field goal and the Lady Cubs were ahead 30-22, but Centerville hit a three pointer and the Lady Cubs held a five point lead at the quarter break.
The fourth quarter was all Lady Cubs, as they outscored the Tornadoes, 12 to 4, Wood started the quarter with a pair of free throws and a field goal off a steal by Lexy Schempp. Brown then found Haisch on a back door play for the biggest Lady Cubs lead of the game, 36 to 25. Wood closed the scoring for the Lady Cubs with a pair of field goals off the press.
In addition to the leader scorers, Haisch added seven points, Schreur had six points while Lexy Schempp put in four points and Mallory Schempp added two points on a rebounded shot in the second quarter. Brown was five of six from the free throw line, while Wood hauled in nine rebounds and Mallory Schempp pulled down eight rebounds.
The JV team also broke away from a 5-5 tie at the end of the first quarter to take a 12 to 5 lead at the half. Alyce Johnson started the quarter with a steal and a lay-up and ended the quarter with a pair of free throws. In between Rie Barnes scored off a left-handed lay-up and Ashley Hanzlik scored on a free throw.
Centerville came back in the third quarter to tie the game at 12-12, but a field goal by Shaina Hummel off a Lexy Schempp feed and a three pointer by Schempp gave the Lady Cubs a 17-15 third quarter lead. In the fourth quarter Alyce Johnson had a steal and a lay-up and a second field goal for the Lady Cubs only scoring.
Lexy Schempp added five points while Hanzlik and Hummel each had three points. Barnes scored two points.
Alcester-Hudson hosts Parker on Dec. 13, travels to Gayville-Volin on Dec. 14 and hosts Viborg on Dec. 17 and Freeman Academy on Dec. 20.
